Page to talk about things I sat through and share anything interesting in them.
Subpages for when this gets too big:
Watched this because I'd always heard people say that it inspired The Legend Of Zelda. I don't think that's ever been proven but it's easy to see loads of similarities.
As someone wih no Nostalgia for it I did not enjoy it more than just appreciating it as a time capsule. It's pleasant to look at, the practical sets/monster costumes are fun, and I loved how there's glitter everywhere even on the demon lord's hooves. Oh yeah and the demon was played by Tim Curry so that was great. But like it's nothing I'll want to revisit.
A scene that stood out to me is where the Princess is hypnotised(?) by an evil dancing dress into wearing it? It was really weird I liked it.
Fun Fact: This film is the origin of the line "even now the evil seed of what you've done germinates within you"
Fun Fact 2: A goblin called the main character "juicy boy"
Vermis is a guidebook for a video game that doesn't exist. The concept and execution are both really good. Lots of cool stylised armor designs in this with strong silhouettes.
If you like dungeon crawlers, worldbuilding and dark fantasy then you'll probably love this, there's also a sequel Vermis II that I've not read yet.
Really really loved this, beautiful and unique soundtrack by Susumu Hirasawa, there's not that many tracks yet I didn't get sick of any of them playing. The art style changes a bit throughout, I guess as the key animators changed? But it looks gorgeous the whole time.
Will be revisting this one a lot in the future. And getting angry that there's not more of the manga adapted by the same studio, just like with Devilman 💔
Directed by Ralph Bakshi, a cult classic collaboration with Frank Frazetta based on his art... I should love this! Unfortunately not, I just found it awkward and boring and sloooooow. Additionally I found the weird aspects (the "subhuhmans" and the fact that the princess is supposed to be 15 (WHAT)) too distracting considering how much of the film's runtime is dedicated exclusively to them.
The art style is beautiful at times, especially the background paintings. Unintentionally funny dialogue/animation is always great. Darkwolf is the highlight of the film, a cool character design that's reminiscent of Batman. I also was very amused by the evil sorceror Nekron. Dude sucked.
Ohoho I like this one. While it has the presentation of an RPG, the experience of playing it is kinda more like a survival horror. Stressful. I was really impressed at how oppressive and immersive the atmosphere feels despite the restrictions of the RPGMaker MV engine, the sound design in particular can be really freaky.
Now for an infamous negative I have to warn people about: the game uses sexual assault gratuitously for shock value/horror, in a several game over scenes, one which is near the start of the game. I understand it's there to add to the bleak violent worldbuilding, but I don't think it adds anything to the experience that the gore and body horror already wasn't doing, to me the tradeoff (upsetting/excluding people and making the game come across as immature/edgy) just wasn't worth including it.
If you were interested but put off with this knowledge, you may like Darkest Dungeon (2015) instead (and if you liked Darkest Dungeon there's a good chance you'd like this too).
Fun fact: In the sequel you can play as a trans character (Marina)
